Your BC security worker licence does not renew itself, and the province does not treat a late renewal as a small administrative slip. Let it lapse and you are not a guard with an overdue form. You are an unlicensed person who cannot legally work a shift until the file is sorted out.

First, the thing that confuses everyone: BST renewal
A lot of people search for "BST renewal", and it is worth clearing up because the answer saves you money.
You do not renew Basic Security Training. BST is a one-time training requirement for your first licence. There is no refresher, no re-sit and no expiry on the training itself.
What expires is the licence. When people say "BST renewal" they almost always mean renewing the security worker licence that BST qualified them for. That is the process below, and it does not involve retaking the course.
If anyone tries to sell you a mandatory "BST renewal course" as a condition of keeping your licence, check that against the Security Programs Division before paying.
How to renew a BC security licence
Renewal is a lighter version of that path. You skip training and the exam entirely, and you repeat the background and application stages.
1. Log in to the Security Programs Division online system.
Renewals are handled through the province's online licensing portal. Use the same account that holds your existing licence. If you cannot get in, resolve the access problem rather than creating a second account, which creates a duplicate-file conflict that takes far longer to untangle than a password reset.
2. Confirm your personal details.
Name, date of birth, current address, contact information, and previous addresses if you have moved. This is the step people skim, and it is the step that most often sends a file back.
3. Complete the criminal record check.
Follow the process the portal directs you to rather than obtaining a generic police check independently. A general-purpose check is frequently not the type required, and you will have paid for the wrong document.
4. Declare anything that has changed.

5. Pay the fee and submit.
Confirm the payment went through and the status actually changes. Keep the confirmation.
6. Watch the email on file.
Including spam. An unread request for one clarifying document is the single most common reason a renewal stalls past the expiry date.
When to start
BC security worker licences run for three years. Start your renewal 60 to 90 days before the expiry date printed on your licence.
That is not padding. The criminal record check is unpredictable: a clean electronic check can clear in days, while one where your name or date of birth produces a possible match needs manual resolution and sometimes fingerprints. You cannot tell in advance which you will get.
If your licence expires within the month and you have not started, treat it as urgent.
What renewal costs
Fees are set by the province and change, so confirm the current amount in the portal before budgeting. As a planning figure, BC security worker licence fees have generally sat in the range of roughly $60 to $240 depending on licence type and term.
Two things worth knowing:
- The criminal record check is charged separately from the licence fee, and paying for the wrong type of check means paying twice.

How long renewal takes
Plan for the same four-to-eight-week window as a first application, minus the training and exam.

What happens if your licence expires
If your licence expires, you cannot legally work as a security worker in BC. Not on reduced duties, not on a site you have worked for years, and not while a renewal is pending. A pending application does not extend an expired licence.
Your employer cannot lawfully schedule you, and a company that does so is risking its own business licence.
Depending on how long it has been expired, you may no longer be able to renew at all and may have to submit a fresh application instead, which is materially heavier and in some cases means redoing training you completed years ago.
If you have lost your licence
A different and much smaller problem. A lost or damaged licence is a replacement request through the same online system, not a renewal and not a new application. You do not retake training, you do not redo the record check, and the term does not restart. A fee normally applies.
Deal with it promptly, because you need to be able to produce a valid licence while working.
Company licences work differently
If you operate a security business rather than work as a guard, you hold a separate security business licence with its own renewal cycle, fee structure and additional requirements.
Two things that catch owners out:

- Every worker on your roster needs a valid individual licence. The business licence does not cover them.
If you are a client rather than a guard, this is worth checking when you choose a security company: ask for the business licence number and confirmation that every assigned guard holds a current worker licence.
