Security Guards in Kelowna: Coverage, Costs and Response Times

Security Guards in Kelowna: Coverage, Costs and Response Times

Very few Kelowna sites need a guard all night. Most need coverage across the two or three hours their own incident history points to.

Kelowna is our home market. The head office is at 575 Hollydell Rd, most of our supervisors live here, and the first contracts the company took in 2020 were in this city.

This is a practical guide to what security coverage in Kelowna actually involves: who books it, what it costs, how fast a guard can realistically reach you, and what to ask before signing.

Who books security here, and what they end up with

The pattern that matters most in that chart is the last line. Very few Kelowna sites genuinely need a guard present all night. Most need coverage across the two or three hours their own incident history points to, which costs a fraction of a full static post.

A provider who asks when your incidents happen before quoting is doing the job properly. One who quotes a twelve-hour post without asking is quoting the easy thing.

Response times, honestly

Kelowna is compact enough that a mobile patrol unit can reach most commercial areas quickly, and that is the honest advantage of a provider actually based here rather than dispatching from the coast.

What to establish with any provider:

  • Where the officer covering your site is physically based. "We service Kelowna" and "our officers live in Kelowna" are different statements.
  • What happens at 3am. A 24/7 operations line is table stakes. Ask what follows when someone answers it.
  • How many properties one patrol vehicle covers per night. Too many and your site gets a drive-past rather than a check.
  • Who supervises, and how often they attend in person. Unsupervised guards drift. This is the difference between a service and a warm body.

Kelowna's geography matters at the edges. Response into Lake Country, West Kelowna or out toward the airport is not the same as response downtown, and a provider should tell you that rather than quote a single number for everywhere.

What it costs

Licensed guard coverage through a properly insured BC company generally starts around $28 per hour and runs into the $40s depending on service type, hours and notice. Four hours is the standard minimum shift across the province. Our cost guide breaks this down by service.

What moves the Kelowna number specifically:

  • Season. Summer demand across hospitality and events tightens availability, and short-notice bookings in July cost more than the same booking in February.
  • Overnight versus daytime. Premiums apply, and most Kelowna security demand is overnight.
  • Patrol versus static. For an empty building, mobile patrol delivers most of the deterrent value at a fraction of the cost, because the vehicle is shared across sites.
  • Term. Ongoing contracts price better per hour than one-off bookings.

Treat a quote materially below the market as a signal rather than a bargain. Guards must be licensed, and a licensed company must carry insurance, run supervision and pay enough to retain people. Well under $28 an hour usually means underpaid guards who churn, thinner insurance than you would want, or work quietly subcontracted to a company you never vetted.

Choosing between the services

Static guarding suits sites with people on them, a fixed entrance to control, or a risk running the whole shift. See static guards explained.

Mobile patrol suits empty buildings, yards, construction sites and multi-property portfolios. See our Okanagan patrol and fire watch guide.

Concierge security suits strata towers and hotel lobbies where the desk is both the service point and the main vulnerability. See concierge versus front-desk staff.

Hybrid is the answer for a lot of Kelowna businesses and is rarely offered unless asked: a static guard across the window your incidents cluster in, patrols either side.

If you are not sure which, a site assessment is the honest first step, and it sometimes concludes that better lighting and a rekeyed door solve the problem for far less than staffed coverage.

What to verify before signing

Both the company and every individual guard must be licensed under the Security Services Act. Both are verifiable, and a provider who hesitates has told you what you need to know.

  • Security business licence number
  • Individual worker licences for the guards assigned to you
  • General liability insurance, with a certificate you can actually see. Fireball Security carries $2M CAD in comprehensive general liability.
  • WorkSafeBC coverage in good standing
  • Whether any part of the contract will be subcontracted, in writing
  • What reporting you receive, and how quickly

Our guide to choosing a security company in Kelowna covers the vetting in more depth.

Getting coverage started

For standard commercial coverage, a few days is typical. For urgent situations, a fire watch requirement or coverage after an overnight break-in, considerably faster.

To get an accurate quote first time, send: property type and size, the hours you need covered, whether it is ongoing or short-term, the specific duties, any insurer or regulatory conditions, and what reporting you expect. Our guide to hiring security guards sets out the full brief.

Frequently asked questions

1. How much does a security guard cost in Kelowna?

Generally from around $28 per hour into the $40s depending on service, hours and notice, with a four-hour minimum shift standard. Mobile patrol costs less per property because the vehicle covers several sites.

2. How quickly can a security guard get to my Kelowna property?

For a patrol unit already working the city, quickly. The question to ask is where the officer covering your site is based and what happens overnight, not what the advertised response time is.

3. Do I need a guard all night?

Usually not. Most Kelowna sites need coverage across the specific window their incidents cluster in. A fortnight of patrol reports normally identifies that window.

4. Are security guards in Kelowna licensed?

They must be. Both the individual guard and the company employing them need current licences under the Security Services Act. Ask for both.

5. What is the difference between static guards and mobile patrol?

Static means an officer stays on your site for the shift. Mobile means a marked vehicle attends several times a night at randomized intervals, with every visit logged. Static gives continuous presence; mobile gives deterrence and provable attendance at lower cost.

6. Do you cover West Kelowna and Lake Country?

Yes, along with Vernon, Penticton and the rest of the valley. Response times differ by distance and a provider should tell you that honestly rather than quote one number for everywhere.

7. Can you help if I only need security for a few days?

Yes. Short-term coverage for an event, a vacancy, a renovation or a fire watch requirement is routine work.
